"Rurre", as people normally call it, has a tropical weather and it lies on the banks of the Beni River. It is the gateway to the world of the jungle.

Rurrenabaque is the starting point for many tours providing an insight into the flora and fauna of the area. The city has many hostels and travel agencies and it's very pleasant for visitors.

How to get to Rurrenabaque

In Rurrenabaque you will need to take an organized tour to access more distant sites, allowing you to see the amazing spectacle of nature. In the city there are several travel agencies, but they all generally offer similar tours. Before recruiting the trip you should talk to a traveler who is already back from the jungle for updated information on the tours and services.
Tours last three days or longer and include a guide, transportation, lodging and food. It is recommended to bring extra supplies of water.

Among the tours two destinations highlight: Jungle ("Selva") and Pampas

Each tour has different characteristics. In the Jungle you will admire the rainforest exuberance, landscapes, vegetation and biodiversity.

Wildlife observation is the main appeal in the Pampas.

The tour to the Jungles goes through the humid sub-Andean mountains´ forests, where lush vegetation stands with large trees, epiphytes, ferns, lianas, orchids and a rich variety of wildlife. But on this ride you won't find many animals as the ecosystem is dense in vegetation and of difficult access. The tour departs from Rurrenabaque and navigates the rivers Beni and Tuichi to reach the famous Madidi National Park (one of the most biodiverse places in the world).

The tour to the Pampas of Yacuma lacks the lush jungle of Madidi, but it's highly recommended for those looking for wild animals. The Pampas are located on the ecosystem of Yacuma River, a few kilometers from the town of Santa Rosa del Yacuma and three hours from Rurrenabaque. On the walk you will see alligators, turtles, capybaras, monkeys, deer, tapirs, ostriches, snakes and a large variety of birds and butterflies. Navigating the river you will also see the pink (Amazonian) dolphins and experience piranhas fishing.
